This is How to Send @Rhea $100 to Help Her Repay $17K in Legal Fees She Spent to Keep 'SEO' Trademark Free

If you haven’t read the Rhea Drysdale blog post this morning about how she saved the industry from having to deal with the annoyance of some guy that wanted to trademark ‘SEO’, then . . . well, you need to keep up on your industry news a little better. You pretty much can’t go anywhere this morning without seeing it.

In summary, Rhea (aka @Rhea on Twitter) spent $17,000 (yes, seventeen thousand) of her own money (no, not Outspoken Media’s money) to fight the likes of some guy (whom I won’t even glorify with repeating his name) over whether or not he had the right to trademark ‘SEO’. A stupid case in my opinion but one that would’ve annoyed us for years and possibly put us into stupid court cases to fight off this guy occasionally over the coming years.

Rhea ended all that for us . . . after 2 years of legal hell and . . . SEVENTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!

So here’s the deal . . . the SEO industry is one of friends and frenemies and we now need to do the ‘right thing’ for Rhea.

I’ve already donated $100 myself and I encourage each of you to do the same. Perhaps do it because you call yourself an SEO and she helped you. Perhaps do it because you are a good moral citizen and it’s just a good thing to help someone else, like Rhea, out that did something that was just ‘right’. Perhaps do it because you need some good karma and this $100 gesture will bring you good karma in the future.

I don’t really care why you do it . . . but please, please, do it. She deserves this.

P.S. I don’t know Rhea well so this isn’t a plea for a friend. I’ve hung out with her only a couple of times at this point. This is, however, a plea to do something morally just for someone in the industry that is clearly one that deserves $100 of your money.

This is what you need to do in order to donate $100 to Rhea to help her repay the $17K in legal fees she paid personally to keep ‘SEO’ trademark free.

Sure it may take 15 mins of your time . . . does it compare to the time Rhea spent? Take the time . . .

Thanks, Brent. I agree - this isn't one of those rally-around-your friends SEO moments. This is a situation where too many of us hid our heads in the sand while a 20-something at the beginning of her career (I don't say that to condescend, but to emphasize the point) did what was right. She shouldn't have to put up all the cash, too.

I'm all teary-eyed and moved. I'm happy to do my small part in helping her out in response to the tremendous help she's done for the SEO industry. I think most of us are still convinced that a small few - let a lone a single person - can make a positive change. Thank you so much, Rhea, for showing us that it's possible.

Good job, B. Folks, if $100 isn't in your budget today, I'm sure any amount is fine. But you know, $200 works too. It was quite humbling to learn someone took this on by themselves.

$100 - Done! - Thanks Brent for making this the easiest thing I had to do today.

My guess is Rhea will never have to buy drinks again at events like PubCon, SMX or SES.

I'm with Dr. Pete. It's humbling, and rather embarrassing, not to have taken up the fight. Kudos to Rhea, and I hope my contribution helps.

Adding a public "done" to this list mainly to ensure we keep momentum on this thing. Keep going people.
